Our Story

In the early spring of 2007, a group of like minded individuals came together over the issues surrounding children with autism spectrum disorders and their families.  Specifically, we realized how under served this population is.  We also realized that often families are forced to seek services and therapies outside of the normal school channels, often at quite a cost – monetary, emotional, and personal.  From these realizations and discussions, The Rubicon School and Learning Center was born.

Our namesake is the Rubicon River, a small river running from north central Italy into the Adriatic Sea.  Named for its reddish color, this river played an important part in a key turning point in history for it was across this river that Julius Caesar marched his army in 49 B.C.E.  This act, in defiance of the Roman Senate and Pompey, led directly to Caesar’s rise to power as dictator and the end of the Roman republic. 

“Crossing the Rubicon” has become proverbial for making a life changing and often irrevocable decision; a moment in which a person leaves an old life behind to take up the challenges and opportunities of a new direction.

It is for this reason that we have chosen this river to be the namesake of our school and learning center.  The Rubicon School and Learning Center has as its purpose and goal to enable children and their families to “cross over” to lives of success, hope, and promise.

 Our Philosophy

Dedicated to serving the needs of children with autism spectrum disorders and other pervasive developmental disorders, Rubicon seeks to be a place where families and children may receive educational, therapeutic, and clinical services in one location for reasonable cost – total service for the total child.  We also seek to be a safe harbor for families and parents serving as a source of support, information, advocacy, and respite.

Our work is guided by several core values.  All children are capable of learning, growing, and developing.  Each child is unique with strengths and struggles characteristic of him or her as an individual.  Our efforts are not hemmed in by apparent limits or stifled by deficits.  Rather, we strive to open up possibilities and develop gifts.  Our children learn differently so we must teach differently and think differently about learning.

Our mission is to provide individualized educational, therapeutic, and clinical care for the unique needs and strengths of each child marked by compassion, understanding, and flexibility.  We honor and support the uniqueness of each child, value diversity, and seek to develop creative, original, and ethical individuals.

Where Are We?

Our address is 729 W. 2nd Street in Edmond, Oklahoma.  The building is located 1 block east of Kelly and 1 block north of Edmond Road.
